Allow me to brag a little

We were informed Friday afternoon that my daughter's story won an Honorable Mention in our local PBS station's Reading Rainbow Young Authors and Illustrators contest!! She wrote and illustrated a story called The Spotted Rabbits and, although I know I am just a teensy bit biased, it was a pretty cute story. There is one winner and two Honorable Mentions in each age category out of 1200 entries. Wowsers!! We get to go to a pizza party at the TV station in a couple of weeks to celebrate. I am so proud of her!

How did I get so lucky to be blessed by this wonderful child? Here is another example of her confidence and her sparkling sense of humor...
This morning at church she made a small presentation to a newly baptized baby. In front of the whole congregation she presented the family with a blanket made by one of the kids in our Wednesday night program. She spoke loudly and clearly, "On behalf of our LOGOS program, we would like to present you with this blanket." Could you have done that when you were nine years old? I know I couldn't have!

And then, we happened to lose the baby's pacifier today. (this is nothing new, unfortunately) So while we were at Wal-Mart I thought I should buy some more. I was so disappointed to find that the particular pacifier the baby loves only came in red, white and blue. This does not reflect on my patriotism, but I was really hoping for something in pink or purple or some other, more hip color So while I stood there and pondered the other selections of pacifiers, wondering if I could pull a switcheroo and get the baby to suck on a different style, Samantha sighs loudly and says, "It's not all about the color, right?"
I giggled and said, "well yes, it is all about the color."
She sighed again and said,"No mom. It's about whether or not the baby is happy." (Like, duh!)
Realizing that she was oh-so-right, I sighed and said, "Okay, okay, you're the voice of reason. Let's go."
To which she replied, "I'm kind of like dad that way, aren't I?"

I'm sure she was referring to yesterday, when I begged and pleaded like a spoiled child for my husband to buy the cutest little Guernsey calf we saw at a petting zoo. It was only $45! And it had the biggest, sweetest, brown eyes you have ever seen. And when he said No and meant it, I pouted like a spoiled child too. I whined about wanting to try my own milking and butter making, and cream separating. But as we were driving away, I realized he had a point when he reminded me that we weren't even sure if the calf was a girl. It never occurred to me to ask that important question! I was a goner as soon as I saw those eyes. So yes, my husband is the voice of reason, and thank God that my daughter is taking after him!

Have a good one everybody!

Wow! Congratulations to your daughter (and to you and dh for raising her, of course)!!! What a wonderful accomplishment.

Your story about the calf made me laugh because Ed and I work the same way. Mostly he is the voice of reason, restraining me when I'm being less than sensible, but occasionally I get to step in and help him (mostly this means reminding him that restoring old cars is no longer something he can do, and he never really liked doing that kind of work anyway. He forgets this when he sees cool old cars for sale, cheap!). I am a total sucker for calves with big brown eyes and velvet noses.
